Do hashtags send your head in a spin? Are you confused about how to use them and what they actually do?

You have probably read or heard many different things about hashtags and how they work but the main thing to realise is that they are a FREE marketing tool. If used correctly, hashtags help your content to be discovered by categorising it to appear in searches.

There is no one set rule on how to use them, but there are definitely best practises and tricks to get the most out of them. Ultimately, they are there for you to use as a way to push your content further than just your current followers and help it reach who you want it to.

If you can set aside a little bit of time here and there to work on your hashtag strategy, especially for Instagram, then you will get the best results. Based on research and experience using them, here is a know-it-all starter guide on how to use them...

SO...WHAT IS A HASHTAG?

  • A hashtag is combination of letters, numbers, or emojis following the # symbol (e.g. #NoFilter or #ThursdayThoughts)
  • They are used to categorise content and make it more discoverable in searches to your target audience.
  • As well as making your content more visible, they help to increase brand awareness, followers, engagement and hopefully... more sales!

HOW DO YOU USE THEM?

  • Use all 30 - You are allowed a maximum of 30 hashtags per post (on Instagram) so why not use them all for more opportunities to be discovered – remember, it's free!

  • Make them relevant – Make sure the hashtags you use are specific to what your post is about but also your industry, your location (if relevant), and your services. Hopefully your posts will be varied so make sure your hashtags resonate with your target audience.

  • Mix them up – Try and use a different combination of hashtags for each post, tailoring them specifically to the content. A good idea is to make a big list covering what your business is about, what services you offer, what industry are you from, and topics add value to your audience, and pick out what's relevant each time.

  • Do your research - When we talk about spending time on a hashtag strategy that includes looking at your peers, competitors and the influential people in your industry and noting what hashtags could be relevant to you. You can also use the search tool (magnifying glass) to search tags and discover related tags to help tailor your lists ready for your content.

  • Location, location, location - Including your location can help with location based searches, especially for localised services. So for example, if someone is looking for a Hair Salon in Cheltenham, they may search the following hashtags: #HairSalon #HairSalonCheltenham #CheltenhamHair #CheltenhamHairDresser #HairstylistCheltenham #HairStylist #CheltenhamHairDresser

  • Size matters - Try to use a combination of both popular and niche-based hashtags. If you always use extremely popular hashtags, your content will struggle to be seen amongst the vast amount of other content. By posting content people want to engage with, along with hashtags that aren’t being used as commonly, you won’t disappear into a high level of post volume. You can check the post volume when you search for a tag as it will show the number alongside it.

  • Include hashtags in your story - This is a trick that often gets overlooked but stories are now the more popular way to interact with another account. When you post a story, include a hashtag or two and shrink them so they are not highly visible.

  • Measure to see what's working - If we don't find out how our posts have performed, how do we know what is working/ not working and hope to improve? On Instagram, if you click 'View Insights' below each post and scroll down, you can see your impressions from hashtags. This is a great way to see if your lists are working well or if they need to be tweaked.

We hope this has helped but remember, we offer lots more tips and tricks when it comes to your social media and marketing.

Social media is changing constantly. The type of content that worked well previously may not be your most engaged with now and that's because our behaviour and preferences change with the platform's updates. To keep ahead of the social media landscape, it's all about adapting and changing it up. So with that in mind, here what's 'in' and what to avoid doing with your social media marketing:
The Benefits of using Social Media for your business
By Neil Kinnerly September 6, 2022
The way we use social media has changed so much over the years, and even more so if you use it for business. It used to be used predominantly as a place to social network on more of a personal level, but now, especially since lockdown, we use it to discover new businesses and buy products more than ever. It is an amazing tool to push your marketing further and reach audiences that you may not ever reach otherwise. However, many business owners are unsure whether to get themselves online, especially if they don't use it themselves or aren't confident doing it for their company. Marketing can be low down on the list of priorities when you have so much else to do in your day to day job, but if you are unsure, here are 15 reasons why you should definitely get your business online:
How to make the most of social media features for business
By Neil Kinnerly May 30, 2022
If you're a business and want to want to promote yourself, you should be on Social Media. That's a fact. Especially as social media is the heart of the post-pandemic shopping experience as we have grown more confident using online portals to access the products we need. Most of us are usually scrolling through our smartphones throughout the day so it's a great way to reach a wider audience that we wouldn't necessarily via other routes. But, having a business profile and occasionally posting basic content isn't enough, however. Every platform offers a range of tools that allow you to push your profile further, but it can be hard to keep up with all the latest features as they evolve weekly. This is why we wanted to help you by compiling a list of the top tools you should be using right now...
